Why a watershed planning approach?

Watershed management planning provides opportunities for
its residents and other stakeholders to address resource and
other issues within the physical boundaries of a watershed,
rather than within political boundaries. It is an inclusive
approach to address environmental conservation and quality
of life issues, using the Lake Fork of the Gunnison watershed
as a holistic planning framework. Watershed management
planning is a process for all the citizens and stakeholder
groups in the Lake Fork watershed to join together in creating
a vision for the watershed’s future, creating partnerships
between the various levels of government, community
organizations, interested publics and other stakeholders with
the common goal of protecting our watershed. Additionally,
watershed management planning is a holistic approach to
implementing many existing programs. Coordinating
community efforts to create a watershed- focused plan can
help us more efficiently reach our goals.

The Lake Fork Watershed Plan is a strategy document with
the purpose of guiding decision- making by stakeholders of
the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River Watershed. It is not
intended to be a regulatory document. The plan provides an
overview of the watershed's natural resources and ecological
zones, present day demographics and cultural and historic
resources, identifies and describes threats to the resources in
the watershed, contains time-based objectives to address
resource issues, and provides programmatic and
organizational strategies for attaining our proposed outcomes.

We are currently in the process of compiling a draft plan that
reflects over two years of collaborative effort by members of
our stakeholder community. We will be posting this plan on
the website in the near future for your review and comments.

Stay tuned!
